An Honest Review: Obon Shokudo; the perfect place for a date, a night out with friends, or a beautiful, mindful lunch to yourself. This magical restaurant, for being relatively new on the vegan Portland scene, has a fairly wide and pristine reputation; nearly every vegan we spoke to about Obon Shokudo already knew about how phenomenal this fully plant-based gem is. A cashier at Next Level Burger told us, "you are in for quite the treat at Obon Shokudo". He was certainly correct. We decided to take my good friends here for a much needed catch-up after 4 years of being away from Portland. Everyone had a fantastic time, enjoyed their food, and left with a smile. With such delicious food, kind staff, and a warm and comfortable environment, its hard to not have a great time here.

Our culinary adventure began with drinks, of course! I ordered an Iced Hojicha Tea, and my boyfriend and Portlander friends ordered seasonal drinks that were super tasty, strong, and fresh. I sampled the yellow drink with the dried orange slice and could immediately taste the high-quality alcohol and fresh juices infused into it. The Iced Hojicha Tea tasted superb and sweet, and was a perfect compliment to the rich and savory food I ordered. My Portlander friends (a couple) raved about the drink that they had ordered; the beautiful, fruity, rosy drink with the mint leaf pictured in the gallery above. The attention to detail in taste and presentation in the drinks was impressive. Next, a generous sample of appetizers were ordered. We sampled the Giant Tater Tots, Kakiage, and a few flavors of seasonal Onigiri. Everything was delicious. For me, the Kakiage and the Giant Tater Tots stole the show, but the Onigiri were also super yummy. The Giant Tater Tots were beautifully concocted and were lovingly filled with fluffy, cloud-like, deep-fried, fluffy potato substance. Dipped into a vegan cream sauce, those Giant Tater Tots took my mind to unexplored corners of my brain. The Kakiage were perfectly cooked, and inspired me deeply. It is truly amazing how something so simple can be so utterly magical. The Onigiri were made with tender rice, and the fillings were all very tasty. For dinner, we ordered Tempura Udon and Curry Udon (two of each). These noodle soups were on point. I kind of lost myself while drinking and enjoying the delicious, rich, and flavorful broth. The noodles were soft, tender, and also a bit juicy. After such savory and delicious food, dessert was absolutely necessary. We ordered the last two Mochi with Adzuki and Strawberry. Perfect; that is how I would describe the mochi. We only got to eat one half each, but that half was truly sacred deliciousness. Mochi with fruit in the middle is truly a food marvel and made my tummy so happy. At the end of our food journey, everyone was happy, beaming with joy, and in agreement that Obon Shokudo is the perfect place to enjoy amazing, modern, revolutionary vegan cuisine.
