An Honest Review:
Penelope's Vegan Taqueria... a burst of unique vegan flavor, colorful walls, and powerful energy. It's hard to miss the little pink vegan taqueria passing by on the streets of Chicago. As soon as you enter, you are flooded with such a visual, auditory, and sensory experience. The food is so wonderful- I loved everything from the colors of the food, the fresh flavors of each dish, the creativity in the menu, and the attention to detail in every accent, including the glasses and plates, that adorned the restaurant and menu. The view of the city was nice, and the spot felt cozy and homey- lived in, with love. The menu is chef-curated which I find marvelous and exciting, and personal in many ways. It doesn't just feel like a fancy dining experience, or another hip vegan joint. When I was dining here, I could feel that I was living in someone's vision. Perhaps, a vision that took a long time to manifest. As a creative person, that is something I value deeply. Their chairs were also soft and very comfortable, which is always a plus.
Food though... mmmm.... this place has it. Penelope's menu is very fresh and invigorating. Each item we had was delicious, tasted authentic, and was just so well done with a modern twist that I left wanting more. In particular, the elote shined bright for my partner and I. We both looked at each other in the eye with intense awe having taken the first bites of the Street Style Elote and Takis Elote. As a vegan, what a unique treat to indulge in. It was absolutely fantastic to experience a traditional treat with a humane, earth-saving edge and a deep nod to Mexican culture. Their tacos were all good- we tried the Soy Al Pastor, Mushroom Chimichurri, Asada, and Baja Taco. My favorite taco was the Baja Taco- how can you go wrong with deep fried avocado? Along with the tacos, we also tried their rice and beans, and the Quesabirra! which of course was... amazing (this item is the second picture down from the top right in the image gallery). We ordered a Strawberry Dragon Fruit Horchata and Horchata and those were also both very good. Penelope's has two other flavors that I plan on trying soon- Matcha Horchata and Butterfly Pea Flower Horchata. They have many other notable items that we plan to come back and try again very soon!
